Northwest Hospital Continues Expanding in Tucson

Tucson, AZ (May 22, 2018) – Northwest Healthcare (NH) has announced it will continue its “No Boundaries” strategy by embarking on approximately $150 million of expansion projects and renovations beginning in 2018. The multi-million dollar investment to enhance patient care, expand health services and upgrade facilities will positively impact thousands of patients in the region who seek high-level healthcare.

The first expansion project will be a medical campus including a “neighborhood hospital,” physician offices and outpatient services in Sahuarita. The plan is contingent upon approval by the Town of Sahuarita’s mayor and council.  If approved, the hospital is expected to open in late 2019.  The facility will have 18 beds and will be located on land just south and east of Sahuarita Road and I-19.  Planned services include an emergency room and two operating rooms. The second floor of the facility will house medical offices with planned services to include primary care, cardiology, orthopedics and general surgery.  We anticipate having approximately 150 staff members throughout the health campus.

Kevin Stockton, Regional President and Market CEO for Northwest Healthcare, said, “We are committed to offering convenient, accessible healthcare across Tucson and surrounding areas.  This expansion will help bring that commitment to fruition and enable us to offer a variety of healthcare services beyond our traditional ‘Northwest’ footprint.”

Since 2014, Northwest Healthcare has invested nearly $70 million in capital projects to increase access and enhance health services for the Tucson community.

Projects included the launch of QuickMed walk-in clinics in Southwest Tucson, Central Tucson and Marana; an urgent care at Speedway and Silverbell; and the county’s first freestanding emergency department (FSED) in Vail.  Northwest also expanded its clinic locations with primary care and cardiology services in Vail (next to the FSED) and is relocating primary care services in the Cortaro Farms area.  NH is opening its second FSED in Marana next to Tucson Premium Outlets in June.

Service delivery has been enhanced with the 60,000 square foot expansion of operating room capacity at Northwest Medical Center; creation of an inpatient rehabilitation facility at NMC; expansion of The Women’s Center neonatal ICU; and addition of a Senior Behavioral Health Unit at Oro Valley Hospital.

According to Stockton, “Our network includes a variety of different levels of care-from emergency care, to urgent care, walk-in care, primary care and specialty clinics.  Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for patients to receive affordable care, and the appropriate level of care, when and where they need it.”

In 2016, as part of its easy access to care commitment, Northwest Healthcare launched online check-in for ER and urgent care visits for non-life-threatening conditions, and online appointment scheduling for primary care visits.  Earlier this year, Northwest added online scheduling for screening mammography and will soon offer online scheduling for other outpatient diagnostic tests.

Additional specifics of the expansion will be released as individual projects are set to begin. Included in the $150 million investment is renovation of the health system’s flagship Northwest Medical Center to enhance the patient care environment.
